Practical guides for panel shops.

Checklists and plain-English guides for electrical panel manufacturers, written by the Steady Rabbit AI practice. Each one gives you the short answer first, then the steps, the checklist and the sources. Where a guide touches work we can take off your team, it points to the matching workflow.

Don’t buy AI quoting software until you’ve run this test

Evaluate AI quoting software by testing it on your own past quotes, not on a vendor demo. Measure line-level accuracy, how often it flags exceptions, how long a reviewer needs to approve a quote, and whether a named person can still override every result. Then check integration, data handling and total cost against a ten-question scorecard.

Quote a control panel without leaving money on the table

To quote a control panel, work through eight steps: confirm the RFQ is complete, build and price the bill of materials, estimate engineering and build labour, add testing and commissioning, add incidentals and contingency, add overhead and margin, state your assumptions, exclusions and validity, and have a second person review it before it goes out.

A 25% markup is not a 25% margin. Price your panels correctly

A control panel cost estimate adds direct materials (with waste and incidentals), engineering labour, build labour, testing and commissioning, overhead and a contingency for named risks. Margin goes on last, and is calculated on price: price equals cost divided by one minus the margin. A 25 percent markup gives only a 20 percent gross margin.

One changed line can derail a panel build. Here’s how to catch it

An engineering change order (ECO) is the formal authorisation to change a released design. A sound process has five steps: raise a change request, assess its impact on cost, schedule, quality and compliance, approve it, implement it across the BOM, drawings and orders, then verify and close it. In a panel shop the critical part is telling purchasing and production before parts are ordered or built.

Check the BOM against the PO before the wrong part is ordered

Before a purchase order is released, check it against the current bill of materials for part number, quantity, revision and supplier, and against the quote for price and lead time. Code each BOM line by supply risk, order long-lead items first, and record substitutes in advance so a delay becomes a planned change, not a surprise.

Is your UL 508A documentation pack complete?

For each UL 508A panel, a shop should produce and keep circuit diagrams that reference the installed components, a bill of materials with part and file numbers, the short-circuit current rating (SCCR) calculation, proof of the enclosure type rating, test and acceptance reports, and the nameplate data, with traceable records of the components actually installed. Confirm the current edition and your programme rules with UL Solutions.
